Is It Safe to Put Client Information in ChatGPT? AI Privacy for Real Estate Agents (2026)

Short answer: It can be, if you change the default settings and limit what you share. On consumer plans, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini may use your chats to improve their models unless you turn that off; business plans (ChatGPT Business/Enterprise, Claude Team/Enterprise, Gemini in qualifying Google Workspace accounts) don't train on your data by default. Either way, avoid pasting Social Security numbers, bank or loan details, full contracts with personal data, or anything your brokerage policy forbids.

What agents should never paste into a consumer AI app

Social Security or driver's license numbers; bank, wire, loan or credit details; full executed contracts, disclosures or inspection reports that name your clients; seller motivation or negotiating positions you owe confidentiality on; and anything covered by your brokerage's AI policy or a non-disclosure. Wire fraud is a major risk in real estate, so keep account numbers out of every tool that doesn't need them.

What is usually fine (with training turned off)

Property facts for a listing description (beds, baths, upgrades, school district), anonymized deal scenarios ("buyer pre-approved at $450k, wants a 3-bed"), market stats, your own scripts and emails, and public information. A simple habit: replace names with roles ("Buyer A", "the seller") and remove addresses that aren't already public. Our ChatGPT prompts for agents are written to work without client data.

Meeting recorders, CRMs and connected AI need the same care

AI notetakers like Otter.ai and Fathom store full conversation transcripts, so tell clients you're recording and follow your state's consent law for recording calls. Connecting ChatGPT or Claude to your CRM (see our MCP guide) sends contact details to the AI provider each time it looks something up, so the training settings above matter even more. If your brokerage already pays for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, its built-in Copilot or Gemini may be the version your compliance team prefers.

A five-minute privacy checklist

1) Turn off model training in every AI app you use with client work. 2) Use a business plan if your team shares client data with AI regularly. 3) Ask your broker whether the brokerage has an approved-AI list or policy. 4) Strip names, account numbers and private details before pasting. 5) Delete chats you don't need, and remember turning off training doesn't remove data already used. 6) Review AI output before it goes to a client; you're responsible for accuracy and Fair Housing compliance. FAQ

Is It Safe to Put Client Information in ChatGPT? AI Privacy for Real Estate Agents?

It can be, if you change the default settings and limit what you share.

Does ChatGPT Plus train on my chats?

Plus is a personal plan, so your chats may be used for training unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Data controls. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise don't train on your data by default.

Does turning off training delete my old chats?

No. In ChatGPT, history stays available after you turn training off. In Claude, the setting applies to new or resumed chats, and data already used for training can't be removed. Delete chats separately if you need to.

Can I use AI with a client's mortgage or financial documents?

Avoid it on consumer plans. Remove account numbers and personal identifiers first, or use a business plan your brokerage approves, and never handle wiring instructions through an AI tool.

Is Microsoft Copilot safer for client data?

Microsoft 365 Copilot in a business account works inside your organization's Microsoft 365 permissions, which many brokerages prefer. Check your own plan's data terms; the consumer Copilot app is a different product.
